Today is October 13, 2025. I’ve been diving deep into the Polkadot ecosystem for a few months now, and one thing I quickly realized is that swapping tokens isn’t always straightforward. I recently had 45 MYTH tokens on my hands and wanted to convert them to DOT to add to my main Polkadot wallet. It felt like a bit of a quest, but I figured it out, and I want to share my experience with you. I’ll focus on using Polkaswap, as that’s what I found most user-friendly.
The Challenge: Cross-Chain Transfers and Swaps
The biggest hurdle, as I discovered, is that Polkadot operates with parachains. MYTH wasn’t directly on the Polkadot chain; it was on Mythos. This meant I couldn’t just directly swap it for DOT. I needed to navigate cross-chain transfers. The process, as I understood it, involved moving the MYTH from Asset Hub to Mythos, then from Mythos to Hydration, swapping on Hydration, and then transferring the DOT back to Polkadot. It sounded complicated, and honestly, it was a little intimidating at first!
Setting Up: Sora Account and Initial Bridging (If Needed)
Before I even touched Polkaswap, I needed to ensure I had a Sora account. I hadn’t used Sora before, so I followed a guide (thankfully, there are good ones out there!). It involved setting up a wallet and understanding the basics of the Sora network. If you’re coming from Ethereum, bridging your tokens to Sora first can be a good starting point, and there are guides available for that too. I didn’t need to bridge from Ethereum in my case, as I acquired the MYTH directly on Mythos.
Using Polkaswap: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Once I had my tokens where they needed to be, I headed to Polkaswap. Here’s what I did:
- Connecting My Wallet: I connected my wallet to Polkaswap. It supports several wallets, which was convenient.
- Navigating to the Swap Interface: I went straight to the swap section. The interface is relatively clean and easy to understand.
- Selecting Tokens: This is where it got a little tricky. I selected MYTH as the token I wanted to swap from and DOT as the token I wanted to swap to.
- Entering the Amount: I entered 45, the amount of MYTH I wanted to swap. Polkaswap immediately showed me an estimated amount of DOT I would receive. It’s important to pay attention to the slippage here – I adjusted it slightly to ensure I got a reasonable rate.
- Confirming the Transaction: I reviewed the details carefully. Polkaswap showed me the gas fees (which, thankfully, weren’t exorbitant). I confirmed the transaction in my wallet.
- The Cross-Chain Magic: This is where the behind-the-scenes work happened. Polkaswap handled the cross-chain transfer from Hydration to Polkadot for me. It took about 15-20 minutes, which was a bit longer than a typical swap, but understandable given the complexity.
- DOT in My Wallet: Finally, the DOT appeared in my Polkadot wallet! It was a huge relief.

Important Considerations & Lessons Learned
- Minimum Swap Amounts: I read somewhere that there’s a minimum DOT requirement for swaps (around 9.66 DOT as of late 2023, though this may change). Luckily, the amount of DOT I received exceeded this threshold.
- Gas Fees: Keep an eye on gas fees. They can fluctuate, and you don’t want to be surprised by a high cost.
- Slippage: Adjust the slippage tolerance to protect yourself from unfavorable exchange rates.
- Double-Check Addresses: Always, always double-check the recipient address before confirming a transaction.
- Patience: Cross-chain transfers take time. Don’t panic if it doesn’t happen instantly.
Beyond Polkaswap: Other Options
While I used Polkaswap, I also came across mentions of Stellaswap on Moonbeam for swapping Polkadot native assets for PEN tokens. There are also options like RocketX for converting ETH to DOT. The best choice depends on your specific needs and the tokens you’re working with.
Final Thoughts
Swapping tokens on Polkadot can be a bit more involved than on some other blockchains, but it’s definitely achievable. Polkaswap made the process much easier for me, handling the complex cross-chain transfers. I hope this guide helps you navigate the Polkadot swap landscape with a little more confidence. It took me a few hours to fully understand and execute the swap, but the feeling of successfully converting my MYTH to DOT was very rewarding!
